Those who can understand the correlation and the connection between 2 subject matters have better retention, increased perspective, and better understanding of things.

Wear Your 3D Glasses

Remember the 3D glasses from the 80s? The red and blue lens on each side?

When you study a subject matter, and look at the same matter in 2 lenses, your depth of knowledge increases. You gain perspective. Your view is not one-sided.

Art & Design

I have this tendency of looking deeper into things, the root of the matter. I realized in college that I have this Topic of Interest every year since high school, and maybe even before. I would delve into studying the history of things, until I reach the root of it.

As soon as I realized that, I became intentional about What is My Topic of Interest of the Year.

This realization got cemented even further when I had a feeling of regret for not pursuing my topic of interest and going all in to the point of making a career out of it. In Filipino there's a term "career-in" as in, "'Wag mong career-in ha" (Don't make a career out of it, ok?) or "Kinareer mo na" (You made it a career!) (A not sarcastic way to say: Wow, you're a pro!). It's both a sarcastic way of telling a person to slow down to someone who tries to do something professionally or someone who's giving something their best shot at things.

In my case, though, it's really a career, and I meant not going all in and making a career out of it in 3rd year college, when students have to choose an elective and are prompted to think what job they want to purse after college. For example, after spending a year or so deliberating what kind of job would I like to focus on and pursue, I struggled narrowing it down to 2D Artist vs. 3D Artist.

Confidence Matters

How You Identify Yourself

I've spent a year or more in college confronting my identity as an Artist. In the middle of it, I realized I don't feel confident about calling myself an artist.

Let's get straight to the point:

  • Art & Design is One

    • I learned this from a book on Renaissance Art or Classical Art.

    • The "Old Masters", think Leonardo Da Vinci, understand the design of things, and use his skills in art to illustrate a point, share a vision, and design many things. He discovers, explores, and this is the way of art: it is exploratory.

      • Art explores a "reality" that is not yet realized, but exists in the mind of the artist. aka Vision.

        • Art skills, illustrating, designing, is creating that reality. How do you make an idea that seems fantastical, or unrealistic to other people, relatable? Make it seem real.

        • So, in a world where dragons exist, what would the lives of the people be like? What will be the houses, what will be the landscape, what will be their clothes, what will be their livelihood, what will be their gadgets and machines? These are exploratory questions that artists find answers to.

        • Art is a way to explore it, find answers, illustrate a point, and design a "reality".

        • Art skills: drawing, sketching, painting, collaging, is used in the process to study, explore, elaborate, design, and paint a picture.

        • Ahh, painting a picture. I supposed this is how most people see and understand art: Art = Painting a Picture. So now, after what I have explained, we shall arrive at this realization…

        • Conclusion: Art is more than just painting a picture.

    • Design in Art

    • Composition. It's a Principle of Art.
